When visiting a friend or acquaintance in their own home, how many people take a glance at the bookshelves and perhaps, even browse a little? This is often an unconscious piece of research into the taste and interests of the person being visited.

In an attempt to represent aspects of an individual by photographing selected details of their bookshelves, I started to make a series of fairly subjective, mini-portraits of people that I visited. I also made some ‘self-portraits’ by photographing books and bookshelves of my own.
